Architecture Styles

FactsStyle
7th Century BCE, earliest of the principal styles. Had circular capitals at the top of columns. Doric
6th Century BCE second earliest of the principal styles. More slender, with a large base and two opposite volutes. Ionic
430 BCE, last of the principal styles. Slender, with an ornate capital, two rows of leaves and 4 scrolls. Corinthian
A combination of the Corinthian and Tuscan orders. Composite
1100-1600, A masonry style, with reduced wall space due to overlaid tracery, flying exterior buttresses, long stained glass and ribbed vaults. Gothic
1000-1150, Heavy and thick masonry walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, and large towers. Was revived in the mid 19th century. Romanesque
500-1000, Thick Rubble Walls, Small Windows, Vaultless Roofs. Pre-Romanesque
1400-1500, Symettrical, Poportional, Geometric, Square, St. Peter's Basicilla. Somewhat of a revival of Greek and Roman architecture. Renaissance
Appeared in Italy around 1600 and spread around Europe. Domes were common, had high deatailed forms, bright color and a lot of decoration. Baroque
700-1500, Post and Lintel Support, Gentrl Curved Roofs and this walls. Uses a single pillar or column. Japanese-Buddhist Architecture
1500-1800, Pointed arches, vaulting techniques known as Muqarnas, and bulbous domes. Persian Architecture
