South Africa known as the Cape Colony, settled by the Dutch in 1600.
Boers Dutch who lived in south africa who engaged in agriculture and used slave labor
1806 South Africa Napoleon's France took over and then the British. Boers did not like this because the British outlawed slave trade and slavery
Great Trek 1834-1836, the Dutch packed up and moved to the north of South Africa, to be free from the British. The only conflict they faced was a large number of Bantu tribesmen that they had to fight
Transvaal, Orange, Free State, and Natal the Bantus and the Boers split up the land into these states The British decided they wanted to take over the whole thing after a few years.
Boer War 1899-1902. this was the first time barbed wire was used. The British defeated the Boars and the Bantu tribes. 6 years later, the British carried out a policy that if a colony held large white population the colonies could hold elections.
Botha won the election in South Africa in 1909
Land Law of 1913 South Africa, this law turned 80-90% of the land to white people
Apartheid Law encouraged extreme segregation, population was divided into 3 groups: whites (full citizens), Asians or mixed race (had property rights) and africans (no rights)
African national congress mat and their goal was to end apartheid laws and give equal rights to all of the people in south africa
Nelson Mandela was put in jails from 1964-1994 for being a part of the african national congress. when he was freed, public election were held and he was voted president
Slum cities found in south america, made of huts with no water or electricity
Allende was elected president of Chile. he was a socialist and interested in nationalizing some industries.
Pinochet overthrew Allende and replaced the government with a dictatorship. There was no nationalization of industry under him
Spiritual Socialism was spoken about and for moral reasons people began to discuss the need for reform (1924)
President Arbenz was elected under the basis of land reform. The US did not like the idea of land reform because it was bad for the US economy. The CIA organized a coup and Arbenz was overthrown. The US also helped arm the Guatemalan army
Neoimperialism when countries interfere for their own benefit like the United States did in Guatemala
Batista was elected president in Cuba. He was a bad ruler but served as leader from 1934-1944 and again from 1952-1959. The United States supported him despite his unpopularity
Fidel Castro led a revolutionary movement to overthrow Batista. By the late 1950s, the United States began to approve of and help castro's movement. An attack was led out of the mountains and Batista was forced out of office.
Bay of Pigs american cuban refugees were landed in Cuba to overthrow Castro. This was unsuccessful and the Cubans were not happy with United States interference
Spy Plane U2 flew over cuba, and confirmed that russia had supplied Cuba with missiles
Kennedy and Cuban missiles in 1962, Kennedy announced to the world that cuba had missiles. There was a completed naval blockade around Cuba. After three days of nuclear threat, Khrushchev agreed to pull out the missiles
Modern China There was a large nationalist party in China that wanted to modernize China's industry and education
Sun Yat-Sen was the leader of the nationalist party. He felt China was not ready for a multi-party democracy.
Kuomintang the name of the Chinese nationalist party
Mao Tse-Tong in the 1920's there was a small communist party under this man. Mao was harassed by Chain Kai-Shek an withdrew into the countryside and began to reshape the communist doctrine to appeal to Chinese peasantry. Mao promised a better life to the peasants
Chaing Kai-Shek came to power in 1926 in China and married the daughter of SUn Yat-Sen. HE was very hostile towards the communists and not a believer of democracy. HE harassed Mao's movement
1931 Japan attacked Manchuria this caused Chaing and Mao to come together to fight the Japanese by 1934. Chiange felt hopeless and signed a treaty that surrendered Manchuria to Japan.
Monolithic Communism the western part of the world seemed to be this. meaning there was a large territory of one style of government: communism
Great Leap Forward an economic program introduced in China in 1958. there was a collectivization of land, and the development of heavy industry. THis plan was not successful and caused widespread famine. Nothing was privately owned and people were not motivated to work hard
Deng Xiaoping came to power when Mao died in 1976. he had a different idea of how to move forward with communism. He made a realm for private ownership so that citizens could own some land and businesses. This system worked well.
Free Speech Movement 1980s when many young chinese dreamed of a political dictatorship
Tianamnmen Square 1989 a large crow met to protest politics. Tanks started to surround peopled and started to roll right through the crowd
Dean Acheson made a famous speech in 1950 to the communist world stating that the United States would defend any country threatened by communism. HE drew lines where he would fight but failed to mention Korea. Soon after, the communist government invaded south korea
Pusan Perimete the united states when to the united nations to ask for help defeating north korea. The UN agreed to aid South Korea and troops from many different countries came to fight
Douglas Macarthur was put in charge of the troops. he surprise landed in different spots in Korea and North Koreans were caught by surprise
Ho Chi MInh was an educated cultural elite that wanted independence from colonial rule in vietnam
Viet Minh a political organization that aimed for independence from France
General Gial led the military to Viet Minh
Dien Bien Phu the french built up thier largest military base in Vietnam here. thousands of troops were stationed here
