| Absolute Monarch | a king or queen who has unlimited power and seeks to control all aspects of Society |
| Divine Right | the idea that God created the monarchy and that the monarch acted as God's representative on Earth |
| War of Spanish Succession | In 1701, England, Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and several German and Italian states joined together to prevent the union of the French and Spanish thrones |
| 30 years War | European conflict over religion, territory, and power among ruling families |
| 7 years war | also known as the French and Indian War took place from 1754 to 1763 on 3 continents. Britain and Prussia battled against Austria, France, and Russia |
| English Civil War | a conflict, lasting from 1642 to 1649, in which Puritan supports of Parliament battles supporters of England's monarchy |

| Peace of Westphalia | weakened the Hapsburg states of Spain and Austria, ended religious wars in Europe; introduced a new method of peace negotiation whereby all participants meet to settle the problems of a war and decide the terms of peace. |
