Absolute Monarch a king or queen who has unlimited power and seeks to control all aspects of Society
Divine Right the idea that God created the monarchy and that the monarch acted as God's representative on Earth
War of Spanish Succession In 1701, England, Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and several German and Italian states joined together to prevent the union of the French and Spanish thrones
30 years War European conflict over religion, territory, and power among ruling families
7 years war also known as the French and Indian War took place from 1754 to 1763 on 3 continents. Britain and Prussia battled against Austria, France, and Russia
English Civil War a conflict, lasting from 1642 to 1649, in which Puritan supports of Parliament battles supporters of England's monarchy
Glorious Revolution the bloodless overthrow of the the English King James II and his replacement by William and Mary
Constitutional Monarchy a system of governing in which the rulers power is limited by law
Edict of Nantes The declaration religious tolerance created by Henry IV that stated Huguenots could live in peace in France and set up places of worship in some cities
Intendants a French government official appointed by the monarch to collect taxes and administer justice
Peace of Westphalia weakened the Hapsburg states of Spain and Austria, ended religious wars in Europe; introduced a new method of peace negotiation whereby all participants meet to settle the problems of a war and decide the terms of peace.
Hapsburg Empire included Spain, Portugal, The Holy Roman Empire, empire in the Americas: Mexicos, Southwestern United States and Northern South America. It covered almost half of the known world at the time
