| vector borne | Living host carries and transmit disease |
| PPE | personal protective equipment |
| MRSA | Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus --resistant to certain antibiotics |
| VRE | Vancomycin resistant enterococci --resistant to certain antibiotics |
| C-diff | clostridium difficule--resistant to certain antibiotics |
| sepsis | life threatening condition of the body to infection can be transmitted person-person |
| fomite | inanimate object capable of spreading disease |
| HAI's | hospital acquired infection or healthcare associated infection |
| nosocomial | AKA HAI's |
| hand hygiene | controlled step in preventing HAI's |
| blood-borne pathogen | microorganism like bacteria or a virus that is carried in the blood and can cause disease |

| standard precautions | past called universal precautions 1st level of protection wearing PPE to prevent exposure |
| isolation precaution | 2nd level of precaution is based on how the infection is transmitted is it airborne (wear mask) is it contact (wear gown) |
| double bagging | using 2 bio-hazard bags to transport specimen collected from a patients isolation room |
