What was Germany like after WW1? Weimar Republic and Political instability (global depression)
What was the Weimar Republic? a democratic government with parliamentary and chancellor
This person was born in Austria, fought in WW1, and joined the Nazi party and became the leader. He also write Mein Kampf Adolf Hitler
What was Mein Kampf about? extreme nationalism, extreme racism, urged all Germans to unite together, and outlined him as a single, powerful leader.
What did Hitler promise to Germans? end reparations, create jobs, and rearm the German military
What is fascism? form of government that has one powerful leader, it is against democracy, has extreme pride in their country (nationalism), and extreme militarism.
What were the conditions in Italy after WW1? government was a monarchy/parliament, economic issues, (debt, unemployment, and inflation), and political instability.
Who founded the Fascist party and was elected to Italian Parliament in 1921? Benito Mussolini
In 1927, who became dictator of Italy? Mussolini
Who made up the Black Shirts group? war veterans who supported Mussolini
Describe Russia after WW1? series of revolutions and civil wars, Communist party takes over, and all Russian territory is absorbed and renamed USSR
Who became leader of USSR/Soviet Union after Lenin died? Josef Stalin
What did Stalin do when he took over USSR? took control of government by force, assassinated any political competition, and wanted to modernize
The taking over of small farms by Soviet government is called what? collectivization
What was The Great Purge? Stalin feared a political overthrow, so he accused thousands of people of treason; they had public trials and were found guilty.
Describe Japan after WW1. government was a monarchy, the Meiji Restoration helped modernize Japan, there was prosperity during the 20s and the economy suffered in the 30s.
Which soldier became the commander of the Japanese military? He was a Fascist and wanted to build a Japanese empire. Hideki Tojo
What changes did Japan see with Tojo as leader? He uses the military to restore order and removes civil rights. The economy improved and he took complete control of Japan by 1941.
Goals of Imperial Japan progress into China and wanted control of all of China. Takes over Korea and their natural resources.
What was the "Rape of Nanking"? During imperialism, 1/4 million Chinese are killed and pattern of brutality begins.
What was the sharp economic downturn in the economy with a stock market crash in the US after WW1? the Great Depression
What were the causes of the Great Depression? Overproduction of supply, economic relationship between the US and Europe, restrictive trade policies, unemployment, and inflation.
What % of banks failed during the Great Depression? 50%
What was the unemployment rate during the Great Depression? 25%
What was the inflation rate during the Great Depression? -25%
