Unit 4 terms you need to know for the Human Geo Finals!

TermDefinition
Nation-state Territory occupied by a group of people that see themeselves as a nation is the same as the politically recognized boundaries.
Stateless Nation People united by culture, language, history, and tradition but do not posses their own state.
Multistate Nation People who share a cultural or ethnic background but live in more than one country
Multination State Struggle to create a sense of unity among different peoples, sometimes causing them to split up
Sovereignty A state's authority to control its territory and govern itself
Self-determination The right of all people to choose their own political status
Colonialism Claiming and dominating overseas territories
Neocolonialism the use of economic, political, cultural, or other pressures to control or influence other countries. (ex. Europe and France digging up all of Africa's gold)
Shatterbelts States form, join, and break up because of ongoing conflictsamong parties and they are caught in between the intrests of more poewrful outside states.
Choke Point Narrow, strategic passageway to another place through which it is difficult to pass.
Relic Boundary Boundaries that dont function as a border anymore but have become a part of the cultural landscape (ex. Great Wall of China)
Superimposed Boundary Boundaries drawn over already exsisted and accepted boundaries by an outside/conquering force.
Antecedent Boundary Boundaries established before many people settle into an area
Subsequent Boundary Boundaries drawn in areas that have been settled by people and where cultural alndscapes already exist or in the process of being established. Most common boundary since it is based off of territoriality.
Consequent Boundary A type of subsequent boundary; they take into account the differences that exist within a cultural landscape. (ex. seperating based off language, religon, ethnicities, ect.)
Geometric Boundary Follow lines of longitude and latitude, usually straight lines. (ex. U.S. and Canada)
UNCLOS United Nations Convention on the Law Of the Sea
Berlin Conference
Defined Boundaries Countries explicitly stae in legally binding documentation such as a treaty where their borders are located
Delimited Boundaries Drawing their boundaries on a map
Demarcated Boundaries Physical boundaries such as stones, pillars, walls, fences, etc.
