Unit 1 terms you need to know for the Human Geo final!

TermDefinition
Reference Maps 'Are generalized sources of geographic data and focus ON LOCATION' (ex. they show the boundaries and names of places)
Thematic Maps "Have a theme or specific purpose and focus on the relationship among geographic data" (ex. a map showing showing the spread of diseases in the world)
Geeospatial Technologies Aka GIS, helps geographers capture, store, organize, and display data.
Quantitative data Data using NUMBERS
Qualitative Data Data using quality (ex. how people feel about something)
Distance Decay Effect of distance on interaction. ((The farther away one thing is away from another, the less likely they are to interact with one another (ex. Going to an HEB that is 5 minutes away rather than one thats 10 mins away because its closer
Absolute Distance Distance that can be measured using a standard unit of length
Relative Distance Distance that is measured in terms (ex. "It took me 7 hours to fly from New York City to Paris")
Time-Space Compression Describes the prrocesses causing the rel;ative distance between places to shrink (ex. Modern transportation reducing travel times, the internet making it easy to communicate with anyone)
Environmental Determinism Human behavior is largely controlled by the physical enviornment
Possibillsm Humans adapt to changes in the enviornemnt, humans have more of an ability to produce a result.
Scales of Analysis Local, national, regional, and global scales
Formal Region An area that has one or more shared traits. (also reffered to as a uniform region) (ex. physical features such as mountain ranges, cultural traits like language/religion, etc.)
Functional Region An area organized by its function around a focal point (Center of activity) (ex. downtown of a city)
Perceptual/Vernacular Region A type of region that reflects people's feelings and attitudes about a place. (defined by people's preception of the place)
