What are alliances? an agreement between 2 or more countries to act as partners to protect their interests
What 2 alliances were suspicious of each other? Austria-Hungary and France and Britain to Russia

What started WW1? the assassination of Franz Ferdinand
Who did Austria-Hungary blame for the assassination? Serbia
Whose alliance pulled Germany into the war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia? Austira-Hungary's
Who was Serbia's alliance that came into war? Russia
Who then declared war to support their ally? France to support Russia
Who invaded Belgium then causing the British to fight the country defending Belgium? Germany
What was all of this fighting called? the Great War later called World War 1
Who became known as the Central Allies? Austria-Hungary, Germany, and their allies
Who became known as the Allied Powers? Russia, France, Britain, Serbia, and others
Who later joined the Allied Powers? Italy
What is a front? the area where the armies fight
How is this war different from any other war? there was new technologies, poison gas, machine guns, fronts seesawing back and forth, and the soldiers dug miles of of ditches or trenches
What was the Civilian War? first "total war", involved people at home, civilians were on a "home" front, factories shifted from automobiles to bombs, airplanes, and guns, women took factory jobs so men could join the army, and women became nurses
What did the government do for the army? they attemted to save food, the amount people could but was controlled, there were "meatless" days to get extra meat for the soldiers, food prices soared, and amny people ate watery soup made from potato peels
How did the U.S. join the war? the U.S. sold supplies to the British and the Germans used submarines to try to stop the supplies from reaching Britain and it's allies. The Germans sank one of these. The U.S. then declared war on Germany and it's allies.
How did the WW1 end? there was an armistice to stop fighting
Who insisted that there be a League of Nations? Woodrow Wilson
Who blamed the Germans for war and froced them to pay enormous fines? the Treaty of Versailles
How long was the armistice for? 20 years
Who developed fascism? Italy and Germany
What is fascism? a new form of government that makes the interests in the nation more important then the interests of the individual
Who made Italy the first fascist country in the 1920's? Benito Mussolini
Who was the leader of fascist Germany? Adolf Hitler
What was Hitler's party know as? the Nazi party
How many people were unemployed in the depression? more then 6 million

What were concentration camps? they gathered millions of prisoners from all over Europe (mostly Jews or friends/family of Jews) and were put in gas chambers to die or to be starved and worked to death as slave laborers.
What was the mass slaughter of being put into concentration camps called and Nazi propaganda? the Holocaust
Who was one of their victims? a 15-year old Jewish girl, Anne Frank; she and her family spent 2 years hiding in Amterdam
How did Anne Frank die? in a Nazi camp just before the war ended

Who dropped the first atomic bomb on who? the U.S. on the city of Hiroshima, Japan
After the bomb did Japan surrender? No, they kept fighting causing the U.S. to drop a second atomib bomb 3 days later on the city of Nagasaki, Japan
True or False: The Japanese did not surrender even after the second bomb? False, the Japanese surrendered on August 14, 1945
What is the term "iron curtain"? described as Europe being divided into democratic countries in the west and the countries Soviet Union controlled in the east
What is the Cold War? a struggle between the Soviet Union and the U.S. and their allies from about 1945 to 1990. During the time no full-scale war broke out.
What was the Berlin Airlift? American and British planes flew into the city with tons of supplies
What was NATO? the Western European nations, the U.S., and Canada formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
What was the Warsaw Pact? the Soviet Union's own military alliance. All the communist nations of Eastern Europe joined the Warsaw Pact
What is the arms race? developed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union as each country raced to have the greatest number of nuclear weapons. This arms race was important to the Cold War. The arms race aroused fears of a nuclear attack.
Was there practice in case of a bomb? If so, what kind of practice? Yes, schoolchildren practiced what to do if a bomb exploded near them. Some families built shelters in their backyard stocked with food and supplies in case of an attack.
What was the Korean war? Korea was free from Japanese after WW2 and there was communist North Korea and communist South Korea. North Korean troops invaded South Korea. the U.S. led armies to fight the United Nations in South Koreas defense.
How did the Korean War end? In 1953 both sides agreed to end the fighting and the boundary before the war started was restored.
What was the Vietnam War? Vietnam was divided into communist north and non-communist south. Communist forces were planning to take over the entire country. The U.S. sent supplies and troops to help Soth Vietnam.
How did the Vietnam War end? North Vietnam seized the rest of Vietnam and included it as a communist state.
What is the Berlin Wall? a concrete wall topped with barbed wire separating East Berlin from West Berlin. It was patrolled and anyone who tried to cross was shot.
Who was Fidel Castro? he led a rebelion to overthrow Cuba' dictator and set up a new government. Castro was soon recieving economic and military support from the Soviet Union.
Who was John F. Kennedy? the U.S. president in 1962 who demanded that the Soviets remove all missiles.
Who was Nikita Khrushchev? the Soviet leader in 1962 who had begun to build missile bases in Cuba.
What was the Cuban Missile Crisis? Nikita began to build missile bases in Cuba. Missiles from Cuba could easily get to the U.S., being a big threat. Kennedy demanded that the Soviet's remove all missiles. He ordered a naval blockade to keep the Soviets from delivering additional missiles.
What was the United Nations Roosevelt, Churchhill, and Stalin set up a new organization called the United Nations, to keep peace in the world.
Who was Mikhail Gorbachev? the new Soviet leader who tried to reform his country. He allowed more freedom for individuals and loosened the Soviet command economy.
Who was Boris Yeltsin? he led a resistance to a communist attemp to overthrow Gorbachev and the control of the government. Some of Gorbachev's changes angered communistmleaders in Moscow. Yeltsin was one of them.
