| Cottage Industry | Small scale production of goods in private homes. |
| Cotton Gin | Created by Eli Whitney; machine that separated seeds from the cotton. |
| Domestic System | The combination of all cottage industry; early industrial labor system in which all goods were produced at home. |
| Enclosure Acts | Acts passed by Parliament enclosing common land.. |
| Factory | Large building where machines are used to manufacture goods. |
| Flying Shuttle | Created by John Kay; created cloth faster. |
| Industrial Revolution | Change in the production of goods – from hand made to machine made. |
| Interchangeable Parts | Parts are standardized so that when they are broken, they may be easily replaced. |
| Mass Production | Large scale production; usually integrated with interchangeable parts and the assembly line. |
| Mechanization | The use of machines for production. |
| Power Loom | Created by Edmund Cartwright; used water, then steam engines to create massive amounts of cloth. |
| Richard Arkwright | Created the water frame; is credited with creating the factory system. |
| Spinning Jenny | Created by James Hargreaves; machine that spun thread much faster. |
| Steam Engine | Improved by James Watt; used coal to power all manner of machines or devices. |
| Sweatshop | Nickname for factories laden with abuses and low wages. |
| Tenement | Cheaply made apartment building. |
| Textiles | Cloth. |
| Tuberculosis | Bacterial disease that caused coughing fits and a wasting away of the body. |
| Water Frame | Created by Arkwright; spun high quality thread & used waterpower. |
