| D-Day | Allied forces invaded Northern France by landing on the beaches of Normandy to retake from Germany |
| Genocide | The attempt to destroy in whole or in part a specific group of people and their culture |
| Universal Declaration of Human Rights | Drafted by the United Nations, an international document that specifically describes the rights and freedoms of all humans to protect from tyrannical governments |
| Iron Curtain | Metaphorical political boundary separating the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist Western Europeans |
| Marshall Plan | An attempt at helping to rebuild Europe, particularly Germany, after World War II |
| NATO | Alliance formed to provide military protection, originally against the Soviet Union |
| Warsaw Pact | Alliance formed by the Soviet Union in response to NATO to spread communism throughout Eastern Europe |

| Policy of Containment | Policy adopted by Truman, to prevent and control the spread of communism |
| Soviet Satellite Nation | A communist nation heavily under the control of the Soviet Union |
| Berlin Wall | A guarded wall/barrier that separated communist east and democratic west of Berlin, Germany |
| Deterrence | Military tactic used to prevent or discourage an armed attack or other unwanted actions |
| Regulation | The government overseeing and controlling a process, such as in economics |
| Glasnost | A policy adopted by the Soviet Union that pushed and allowed for open discussion of social and political issues |
| Perestroika | A policy instituted by the Soviet Union to reform the current economic and political system of the country, in hopes of bringing the Soviet Union economically up to par with capitalist countries like the US |
