Appeasement Giving in to an aggressor’s demands in hopes that further conflict will not ensue
Pacifism Belief that conflicts can be resolved in a peaceful way without violence
D-Day Allied forces invaded Northern France by landing on the beaches of Normandy to retake from Germany
Genocide The attempt to destroy in whole or in part a specific group of people and their culture
Universal Declaration of Human Rights Drafted by the United Nations, an international document that specifically describes the rights and freedoms of all humans to protect from tyrannical governments
Iron Curtain Metaphorical political boundary separating the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist Western Europeans
Marshall Plan An attempt at helping to rebuild Europe, particularly Germany, after World War II
NATO Alliance formed to provide military protection, originally against the Soviet Union
Warsaw Pact Alliance formed by the Soviet Union in response to NATO to spread communism throughout Eastern Europe
Axis Powers World War II alliance system consisting of Japan, Germany, and Italy
Allied Powers World War II alliance system consisting of Britain, France, and the United States
Prime Minister The leader of a parliamentary government, such as in Britain
Yalta Conference A major conference following WW2, between the 3 allied leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union, to discuss the final plans for Nazi Germany
Free Enterprise System The freedom to own and regulate business controlled by the people
Policy of Containment Policy adopted by Truman, to prevent and control the spread of communism
Soviet Satellite Nation A communist nation heavily under the control of the Soviet Union
Berlin Wall A guarded wall/barrier that separated communist east and democratic west of Berlin, Germany
Deterrence Military tactic used to prevent or discourage an armed attack or other unwanted actions
Regulation The government overseeing and controlling a process, such as in economics
Glasnost A policy adopted by the Soviet Union that pushed and allowed for open discussion of social and political issues
Perestroika A policy instituted by the Soviet Union to reform the current economic and political system of the country, in hopes of bringing the Soviet Union economically up to par with capitalist countries like the US
