Turkic Peoples The people who live or are from the vast stretch of land between east-central Asia and the Anatolian Peninsula, which is between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean
Assimilation The process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society
Cosmopolitan including or containing people and their culture from many different regions of the world
Urbanization The mass movement of people from rural areas to more densely populated areas
Coerced Labor Work a person does for another person (or for the state) under compulsion, receiving little or no recompense
Serfdom An institutional system which obliged a peasant to provide forced labor services to his landlord in exchange for being allowed to occupy land
Song Dynasty Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 960 to 1279 Based around Confucian principles
Confucianism The ethical system of Confucius, emphasizing moral order, the humanity and virtue of China's ancient rulers, and gentlemanly education
Filial Piety Worshipping and respecting ones parents and ancestors
Neo-Confucianism Revival of Confucianism that include influences from Buddhism and Daoism and helped blend China through religious diversity
Bureaucracy Non-elected government officials, system of managing government through departments run by appointed officials
Chama Rice Drought-resistant and early-ripening that originated in Vietnam but was shortly adopted by China
Feudalism Land-based form of government and system of exchange between a landholding feudal lord and vassals Vassals promised loyalty in exchange for land
Shogunate Hereditary military dictatorship of Japan
Dar al Islam Name given to everywhere in the world that is under the rule of Islamic law
Sufism, Sufis Group of mystics that rejected outward focus of Islam but instead, seeking an inward, more direct spiritual experience with divine love and knowledge of God
Sunni, Shia Sunni: Islamic community should choose successor of Muhammad after he died (90%) Shia: Successor should be a family member (10%)
Abbasid Caliphate (Baghdad) Major dynasty that ruled over the Islamic Empire during its peak
Al-Andalus Muslim kingdom that occupied much of the Iberian Peninsula from 711 CE until the collapse of the Spanish Umayyad dynasty in the early 11th century
Astrolabe Navigational instrument for determining latitude
Compass Navigation instrument used for determining direction; allowed ships to travel without hugging shores
Monsoon Winds Alternating wind currents that blew eastward across the Indian Ocean in the summer and westward in the winter, Facilitating trade (Very predictable)
Diasporic Communities Groups of people with a similar heritage or homeland who have moved out to places all over the world in search of wealth
Yuan Dynasty Dynasty established by Mongol nomads that ruled portions and eventually all of China from the early 13th century to 1368
