Med Term Ch 2

word parts,terms, and/or abbreviations from chapter 2

TermDefinition
Ventral/antral/anterior meaning the front the word ventral means "stomach"
dorsal/posterior meaning the back
cranial meaning towards the top (remember cranium as in head, which is at the top of your body)
caudal meaning the bottom
Prone Means patient is lying down on their belly.
Supine Means patient is lying down on their back,
Contralateral Meaning opposite side (remember contradict or do the opposite)
Ipsilateral Meaning on the same side
Unilateral Unilateral means one side. (remember Uni means one)
Proximal meaning closer to the center
Distal Meaning farther away from the center. (distal and distant come from the same word and both mean far)
Dorsum Dorsum means the top of hand or foot.
Plantar Plantar means the sole of the foot (remember plant like plant in/on the ground)
Palmar Palmar means the palm of the hand
Sagittal One of the 3 dimensions; meaning Right to Left.
Coronal One of the 3 dimensions; meaning from front to back. (remember Corona is Latin for crown, like head. ) (this divides the body from front to back, from the top of the head down.
Transverse One of the 3 dimensions meaning from the top to the bottom
ECU ECU stands for Emergency Care Unit
CCU CCU stands for Coronary Care Unit
ER ER stands for Emergency Room
ED ED stands for emergency department
ICU ICU stands for intensive care unit
PICU PICU stands for pediatric intensive care unit
NICU NICU stands for neonatal intensive care unit
SICU SICU stands for Surgical intensive care unit
PACU PACU stands for post anesthesia care unit
L & D L & D stands for labor and delivery
OR OR stands or operating room
Post-op Post-op stands for post operative (post meaning after) meaning after surgery
Pre-op Pre-op stands for pre (before) operative (surgery) meaning before surgery.
Acute It just started recently or it is a sharp, severe symptom.
Chronic It's been going on for awhile now.
Exacerbation It is getting worse.
Abrubt All of the sudden.
Febrile Meaning to have a fever.
Afebrile Meaning to not have a fever.
Malaise Not feeling well
Progressive more and more each day (It's progressing, making progress)
Symptom Something a patient feels
Noncontributory not related to this specific problem
lethargic a decrease in the level of consciousness; in a medical record, this is generally an indication that the patient is really sick.
