| adaptation | A change made to an existing object or way of doing things |
| cultural diffusion | The spread of cultural elements from one society to another |
| scholar | a person who has done advanced study in a special field |
| Baghdad | Capital of the Muslim empire during the Abbasid Dynasty; city between the Tigris and Euphrates River; located in present-day Iraq |
| mosque | Muslim place of worship |
| minaret | the tower of a mosque from which Muslims are called to prayer |
| muezzin | a man who calls Muslims to prayer from the minaret of a mosque |
| imam | the person who leads prayers in a mosque; they lead prayers, deliver sermons, and provide religious education and counseling |
| Arabic | relating to the literature or language of Arab people |
| philosopher | A scholar, teacher, or thinker who seeks knowledge |
| logic | A way of thinking that uses reason and truth |
| immortal | Able to live forever |
| zoology | The scientific study of animals |
| evolution | The slow process of change in plants and animals from simpler forms to more complex forms |
| astronomy | The study of objects in the universe |
| astrolabe | ancient tool used in solving problems that involve time and the position of the sun and stars. Helped with navigation |
| calligraphy | The art of beautiful handwriting |
| textile | A type of cloth or woven fabric; manufactured fabrics |
| polo | Sport in which teams on horseback use mallets to strike a ball through a goal |
| intellectual | related to the interest in or study of ideas |
| chess | a game for two players each of whom moves sixteen pieces according to fixed rules across a checkerboard and tries to checkmate the opponent's king |
| waterwheel | a large wheel driven by flowing water, used to work machinery or to raise water to a higher level |
| Algebra | A form of mathematics used to solve problems involving unknown numbers; “the reunion of broken parts” |
