Piglet A generic term for a pig offspring of either sex
Gilt An immature female pig who has not yet given birth
Sow A mature female pig who has given birth
Boar A mature uncastrated male pig

Snout The leathery and mobile nose and nostrils of a pig
Jowl A pig's lower jaw and cheek
Ham The upper rear leg area of a pig; Same as the cut of meat
American Landrace Originates in Denmark. Long bodied with large drooping ears. Completely white in color with long and narrow faces. Between medium and large size. Most commonly used in U.S. crossbreeding systems and renowned for its mothering abilties
Berkshire Originates in England. Have black coats with white feet and legs, a stripe on the face and the tip of the tail. The face is broad and slightly-medium dished with a short snout and erect ears. Smaller breed and used for meat and crossbreeding.
Chester White Originates in US. All white with a wide stance. Head is medium in length with a slight dish and drooping ears. Medium sized, used both as purebreds and in crossbreeding for their mothering abilities
Duroc Originates in US. Light golden to dark red. Face is slightly dished with a medium length snout and drooping ears. Ragged in conformation and adaptable to a wide range of environments. A large breed, commonly used as sires in commercial crossbreeding.
Hampshire Originates in England. All black with a white band covering the shoulders, front legs, and front feet. Ears usually erect, but some tilt due to breeding practices. More active than some breeds. Medium sized and used for meat and crossbreeding
Hereford Originates in Missouri. Markings resemble that of the cattle breed of the same name, 2/3 red and 1/3 white. Face is medium length with a slight dish. Breed is passive and medium to large, used most often for meat and good mothering abilities.
Pietrain Originates in Belgium. White base color with black spots, each of which is surrounded by a ring of light pigmentation. Has erect ears and is a carrier of PSS (Porcine Stress Syndrome). Large size and heavily muscled, used for meat production and breeding
Poland China Originates in Kentucky US. Medium in length with rugged makeup. Medium length face with slight dish and drooping ears. Black with white points on feet, nose, and tail tip. One of the largest breeds and is used for meat, being known as a good feeder.
Spot Originates in Indiana US. Body conformation similar to that of Poland China. Spotted black and white, 50/50. Med length face, slight dish, ears droop. Larger breed used both as a purebred and in crossbreeding and known for its growth rate and structure.
Tamworth Originates in Ireland. Solid red with erect ears and an arched back with a long, narrow face and snout. Medium sized and used for meat production and its protective mothering ability.
Vietnamese Potbelly Originates in Vietnam. Small size with a variety of colors and patterns. Used for meat (especially bacon) and as pets.
Yorkshire Originates in England. Broad face with medium dish and a med length snout. Ears erect, but some tilt due to breeding practices. All white and considered one of the largest breeds, one of the best for crossbreeding and has mothering ability and muscling.
