What is Body Composition? All of the tissues that together make up your body.
Why do you need to know about body composition? Because having too much or too little fat and leads to health issues. You need to have a healthy level of body fat.
Obesity An excess of body fat that leads health risks and issues.
What does obesity do? It is the leading cause of preventable death accounting for over 300,000 deaths a year.
What does obesity do to your body parts? Your heart has to work harder, you may develop high blood pressure, and have an increased risk of stroke. It also raises the chances of diabetes, Osteoarthritis, and heart disease.
Under fat When you don't have enough body fat for bodily functions and is very dangerous.
Amenorrhea When a woman has less than 10% body fat it messes with hormonal functions.
Why is some fat needed? It is needed for absorption of vitamins, insulation, and energy.
How do we measure body composition? Skin-fold calipers, Hydro-static Weighing, Impedance machine (Tanita Scale)
BMI Body mass index. You want to be between 18.5 and 24.9
BMR Basal Metabolic Rate ( The calories needed for basic upkeep of the body) Muscles change this the most
TBW Total Body Water, should be between 50% to 70%
Factors that influence body composition Diet, Heredity, Metabolism, Maturation, Early obesity, Physical activity.
