| Mughal Empire | Muslim dynasty of Turkish and Mongol peoples that ruled most of northern India from the early 16th (1500s) to the mid-18th (1750s) century. Akbar the Great was one of their most famous leaders. |
| Ottoman Empire | A Muslim empire of Ottoman Turks that controlled some of Eastern Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Sulieman the Magnificent was one its most famous rulers. It conquered the Byzantine Empire in 1453 and renamed the capital Constantinople and called it Istanbul. It fell in 1922 after World War I. |
| Tokugawa Shogunate | The Feudal period in Japan when the Shoguns (Nobles) ruled instead of the emperor and they isolated Japan from outside trade and influence. |
| Absolute Monarchy of France (Louis XIV) | King Louis XIV ruled based upon Divine Right and used complete or total power over his subjects. He built the palace of Versailles as a means by which to control the nobles of the 2nd Estate. |
| Russian Empire | The Russian Empire was a vast empire that existed from 1721 until it was overthrown by the Revolution in 1917. Its most notable rulers were Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. |
| Qing Dynasty | The Qing Dynasty was the last Chinese Dynasty, and the longest dynasty ruled by foreigners (the Manchu from Manchuria, northeast of the Great Wall of China). The empire fell in 1912 and China became a republic under Sun Yat-Sen. |
| Ashanti Empire (West African Kingdom) | Existed from the 17th (1600s) to the 20th (1900s) century. It was a Muslim kingdom located in West Africa in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. It traded with the British Empire for guns and goods in exchange for gold and slaves and had religious toleration for Christians. |
| Benin (West African Kingdom) | Built up an empire and started trading with merchants from Europe. By the 1800s, Benin was no longer strong or united. The kingdom came to a sudden end in 1897, when a British Army invaded and made it part of the British Empire. |
| Dahomey (West African Kingdom) | Existed from about 1600 until 1894, when it was defeated by the French, and the country was annexed (taken over) into the French colonial empire. It organized domestic economy built on conquest and slave labor, significant international trade with European powers, a centralized administration, taxation systems, and an organized military and an all-female military unit. |
| Divine Right | This is a theory or idea that a ruler was chosen directly by God. All absolute monarchs believe in this theory. |
| Warm Water Port | Most Tzars (Emperors of Russia) expanded the Russian Empire in search of a port to use for trade that did not freeze in the winter. |
| Akbar the Great | Mughal ruler who reestablished and consolidated the Mughal Empire from all of norther and part of central India. He created a system of government which included Hindus and culturally had established religious toleration between Hindus and Muslims. |
| King Louis XIV | Absolute Monarch of France who was an enlightened ruler that brought France into a golden age of art, science, architecture, literature, and math. He started the Palace of Versailles and ruled by Divine Right. |
| Peter the Great | The Tzar (Czar) of Russia who led Russia and modernized and westernized it. He built St. Petersburg and made the nobles follow his westernized laws such as cutting their beards. |
| Catherine the Great | The Tzarina of Russia. She was an enlightened ruler who brought Russia into a golden age. She expanded the empire and gained a warm water port for trading. |
