add-on safety feature The device is either a hinged or sliding sheath attached to the needle. Activating the device is done with one hand by either moving the hinged sheath into place or sliding the sheath up and over the needle tip.
autoclave The primary method for sterilizing instruments and equipment is the use of pressurized steam in an autoclave (Figure 35-6). This device forces the temperature of steam above the boiling point of water (212˚F, or 100˚C).
biological indicator containing bacterial spores—are used as a quality control method to confirm that sterilization has occurred.
catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) Bacteria can enter the urinary tract by way of the catheter. Pts who use catheters on a regular, long term basis, are at risk for these.
Central Line a catheter placed in a large vein, usually in the neck, chest, or groin, used to give fluids or medications.
Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) are caused by the entry of infectious microorganisms into the bloodstream by way of a central line.
healthcare-associated infection (a.k.a. Nosocomial infection) A healthcare-associated infection is one acquired by a patient in a healthcare setting.
invasive procedure (any procedure that requires entry into a body cavity or cutting into skin or mucous membranes
Medical Asepsis or clean technique, is based on maintaining cleanliness to prevent the spread of microorganisms and to ensure that there are as few microorganisms in the medical environment as possible.
Personal Protective Equipment any type of protective gear worn to guard against physical hazards. Healthcare workers require many kinds of personal protective equipment to do their jobs, including gloves, masks and protective eyewear or face shields, and protective clothing
Re-sheathing scalpel are single-use, disposable devices. After use, the healthcare practitioner slides a sheath over the blade, locking it in place.
Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette defending yourself and others against infectious agents spread by respiratory droplets.
Retractable Needle a needle that retracts inside the barrel of the syringe after it is activated. Once the medication is injected, the plunger is pushed again and the needle withdraws inside the syringe.
Self-blunting/blunt tip, blood-drawing needle have a blunt tip that slides forward through the needle past the sharp point. This puts the sharp point of the needle below the blunt tip, removing the danger of a needlestick injury.
self-sheathing needle have a sheath over the barrel of the syringe. After injecting the patient, the user slides the sheath forward over the needle and locks it into place. The sheath completely covers the needle.
sterilization indicator include special packages, tags, inserts, tapes, tubes, and strips that confirm the items in the autoclave have been exposed to the correct volume of steam at the correct temperature for the correct length of time.
Surgical Asepsis or sterile technique, depends on a completely sterile environment that eliminates all microorganisms. The goal of surgical asepsis is to keep organisms from entering the body.
Surgical site infection (SSI) An infection that occurs after a surgical procedure at the site of surgery.
