Term | Definition |

Hemorrhage | severe bleeding. |
Hypothermia | body temp of 95 degrees or < less. |
Hyperthermia | body temp of 104 degrees or > greater. |
Vasoconstriction | blood vessels get smaller(cold causes this). |
Vasodilation | blood vessels get larger(heat causes this). |
Anesthesia | lack of sensation or feeling (different kinds: local, spinal, and general). |
Aspiration | to accidentally breathe food, fluid, or emesis into your lungs. |
Embolus | blood clot that is moving. |
Thrombus | blood clot that is sitting still. |
Hypoxia | low oxygen (O2) |
Cyanosis | bluish skin (sign of low oxygen) |
Nosocomial | Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI, caught it from the hospital). |
NPO | Nothing by mouth. |
Preoperative | Before the surgery. |
Postoperative | After the surgery. |
Prosthesis | Artificial limb or body part. |
PACU | Post Anesthesia Care Unit(also called the recovery room). |
Singultus | Hiccups. |
TED hose | Special stockings used to prevent edema and blood clots in the legs (same as anti-embolism hose- special socks). |
Thrombophlebitis | Inflammation of a vein caused by a blood clot (sometimes called a DVT). |
Umbilicus | Belly button. |
Vertigo | Dizziness. |
Cerebral edema | Swelling on the brain. |
Pulmonary edema | Swelling or fluid in the lungs. |
PE | Pulmonary embolus (blood clot in the lungs). |
TCDB | Turn, Cough, Deep Breathe (helps to prevent the post-op complications of pneumonia). |
SOB | Shortness of breath. |
Anti-embolism hose | Special socks that help to prevent swelling and/or blood clots in the legs (supports the veins and circulation). |
Dyspnea | Difficulty breathing. |
Ambulation | To walk. |
Post-op leg exercises | Helps to prevent blood clots in the legs after surgery. |
Vital signs | To check all 4 vital signs: TPR & BP |
Orthostatic hypotension | A significant drop in blood pressure when a person changes position from lying to sitting OR from sitting to standing. |
Near syncope | Almost faint (can be caused by dehydration, illness, medications, hypotension, or heart dysrhythmia). |
Syncopal episode | When someone faints (can be caused by dehydration, illness, hypotension, or irregular heart beat). Needs to be investigated by doctor or NP to determine the cause of the problem in order to treat the problem to prevent it from happening again. |
