Armor a covering of iron worn by knights for protection
Bishop a church official who oversaw the work of priests within their district
Cardinal a high official of the Catholic Church who was appointed by the pope
Castle where the lords and knights lived; usually built on a cliff or hilltop to help defend during attack
Catholic Church ppl in the Middle Ages believed it represented God's rules and teachings; religion was very important during medievil times so it was known as "The Age of Faith"
Chivalry qualities of a good knight
Clergyman an official of the Church such as a bishop, priest or a cardinal
Crusades expaditions sent by the pope to capture the "Holy Lands" from the Muslim-Turks
Dark Ages a period of several years during the Middle Ages where fear and cnfusion spread among the ppl
Estate a large peice of lanfd owned by a lord; also known as a manor
Excommunication the act of removing someone from the Church; WORST punishment
Feudalism arrangement between the lords, vassals, and serfs
Fief land given by a lord to a vassal in return for military service
Friar holy man that traveled from place to place helping the poor and teaching about God
Heresy a serious crime in the Middle Ages in which a person held beleifs that the Church felt were wrong
Inquisition a court set up by the Roman Catholic Church to investigate heresy and punish heretics
Jesters clowns who appeared before the lord and tried to make him laugh
Joust a contest between knights on horseback; tried to knock opponent off his/her horse
King a person who rules a country
Knight a man of honor who held a high military rank
Lord a well-to-do noble who owned an estate; usually lived in a castle; gave land to vassals for military services
Manor a large peice of land owned by a lord; also called an estate
Medieval Period fall of the Roman empire in the West in 476 ended in 1400's. known for feudalism and the strong influence of the Roman Catholic Church
Middle Ages same as the Medieval Period
Minstrels singers and musicians who entertained the lords; played harps, guitars and flutes
Moat a deep wide water filled ditch that surrounded a castle
Monastery a building where monks live
Monk a man who gave up all of his property and dedicated his life to serving God
Nobility a class of rich people; nobles or lords
Peasents poor peolple who worked on manors; also called serfs. backbone of the Middle Ages
Pope the head of the Roman Catholic Church; choosen by a meeting of cardinals
Priest a clergyman of the Christian church
Serfs same as peasents
Tournament a contest or joust between two knights or two groups of knoghts
Troubadours wandering minstrels who wrote poems that usually expressed love for a beautiful lady
Vassal a noble who was given land by the lord in return for military assistance and other services to the lord
Why did the Germans move into the Roman Empire? Because the Romans could no longer hold them back
