Who was the first Roman Emperor? Augustus
What did the Romans call the Mediterranean Sea? mare nostrum (our sea)
What did Augustus do after gaining control of Rome? He showed great respect for Roman Senators and tried not to act like a king.
What did Augustus say he wanted to do? He claimed he wanted to share power with the Senate and restore the republic (but this never happened)
Why did the people give Augustus as much power as he wanted? Because they were grateful for the peace and prosperity.
What did the Roman do after a conquest? they took some people as slaves, but most of conquered people were free
What did each Roman Provence have? A governor to rule
What was a province? It was a area of the Roman Empire.
What did the Romans wisely did NOT do to the people they conquered? Force their way of life upon them
Did the roman allow conquered to practice their won religions? Yes
Who ran the daily affairs of the conquered peoples? The local rulers
What happened to most of the conquered people of Rome? The leaned Latin, worshiped Roman gods, paid Roman taxes and bought Roman goods; while Rome used their natural resources.
Who were Augustus, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius? Good Roman emperors
Who were some of the bad emperors? Nero, Caligula, and Commodus
Who was perhaps the greatest Roman Emperor? Hadrian
Who was the son of Marcus Aurelius Commodus
Commodus ruled how? with brutality
What laws did Hadrian pass? laws to protect women, children and slaves
How did Hadrian reorganize the the Army? As so they could defend their home provinces.
Who did Nero murder? His wife and half-brother
What Roman Emperor burn Rome to the ground? Nero
What Roman Emperor declared himself a god? Caligula
Why did the the Romans remove Nero and Caligula's name from official Roman records? Because they hated them so much
How important was Greek influence on Rome? many Romans visited Greece to study Greek achievements, art, architecture, and ideas about governemt
What is polytheism? The belief in many gods.

How was the Roman and Greek idea about education different? The Greeks were interested in ideas, they sought to know the truths of the world through reason. The Romans were interested in learning about subjects and how to apply them to the truths of the world.
What was the Roman style of architecture? Heavier and stronger than those of the Greeks
Who did the Romans make advances? They made architecture advances with the use of the arch
What is an arch? a curved structure used as a support over an open space as in a door way.
What was another invention created by the Romans? concrete
What is concrete? a mixture of stone, sand, cement and water.
How did concrete help Roman builders? They were able to make buildings taller then ever before
What was the greatest Roman building ever built? The Roman Colosseum
What were aqueducts? Structures that carried water over long distances
Where did Roman engineers build road to? Every part of the Empire
What Roman Emperor created a code of justice? Justinian
