Civil Service Exam | A test given to qualify candidates for positions in the government. It was based on Confucianism |
Confucianism | A philosophy that adheres to the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius. It shows the way to ensure a stable government and an orderly society in the present world and stresses a moral code of conduct. The focus of this philosophy is to bring social order by having an educated government, teaching respect for your elders, and by teaching the five relationships. |
Daoism | Philosophy developed by Lao- Tzu advocating a simple and honest life focusing on the energy in nature |
Dynastic Cycle | The pattern of rise, decline, and fall of dynasties based on the Mandate of Heaven. |
Dynasty | A family that passes the right to rule down from generation to generation (ex. father to son) |
Filial Piety | Respect for parents |
Five Relationships | Confucian idea about social order-everyone has a place and respect is paid to elders, parents, and the government. The relationships are ruler to ruled, father to son, older brother to younger brother, husband to wife, friend to friend. |
Great Wall of China | World’s longest man-made structure built to keep invaders from the north out of China-started by the Qin Dynasty, expanded by the Han Dynasty |
Han Dynasty | Time of peace and prosperity in China- often regarded as the Golden Age of Chinese Dynasties. Followed Confucianism and created social order in society. Created a government system based off merit (you had to earn your job by taking civil service exam to prove you were educated and skilled enough for that position). Expanded China- Silk Roads began under Han control. |
Han Feizi | Founder of Legalism |
Lao Tsi | Founder of Taoism/Taoism |
Legalism | Chinese philosophy developed by Hanfeizi; He taught that humans are naturally evil and therefore need to be governed by harsh laws. |
Mandate of Heaven | Obtain the right to rule from the gods. The Chinese believe that the gods chose the ruling families, but that they could lose the mandate and the gods could choose a new family if they were not ruling well over China. |
Monarchy | A government ruled by a king or queen |
Mongols | People from northern Asia, who became master horse riders. Under their leader Genghis Khan ruled over one of the largest land empires in history. Became the Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis Khan’s grandson Kublai Khan took over China. |
Qin Dynasty | A short-lived Chinese dynasty that replaced the Zhou dynasty in the third century BC. Led by Qin Shi Huangdi, who chose to use legalism as a philosophy for the dynasty. |
Song Dynasty | The Song dynasty was the first in world history to issue banknotes or true paper money and the first Chinese government to establish a permanent standing navy. This dynasty saw the first recorded chemical formula of gunpowder, the invention of gunpowder weapons such as fire arrows, bombs, and the fire lance. |
Tang Dynasty | Considered a golden age. developed a successful form of government and administration, and saw a growth in the arts. |
Terracotta Army | A collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huangdi. He believed that he would be protected in the afterlife. |
Warring States Period | A time of war and chaos between regional lords after the decline of the Zhou dynasty. |
Zhou Dynasty | The dynasty that created the idea of the mandate of heaven and the dynastic cycle. Towards the end of their rule, they lost power and China fell into a moment of chaos. This is the time when philosophies developed. |
