Geography Vocabulary

| geography | the study of the Earth’s physical and cultural features. |
| region | an area with one or more features that make it different from surrounding areas. |
| climate | the average weather conditions in a certain area. |
| landforms | the natural feature of the Earth’s surface |
| continents | seven great land masses of the world |
| latitude | the east-west (parallel) lines in a grid. Measure the distance north and south of the equator |
| longitude | the north-south (meridian) lines in a grid. Measure east and west of the Prime Meridian |
| Equator | an imaginary line encircling the Earth equally distant from both poles. Divides the Southern Hemisphere from the Northern Hemisphere. Rays from the sun are most direct here |
| Prime Meridian | Imaginary line that passes through the North and South Pole It also shows 0 degrees longitude |
| environment | All the living and nonliving things that affect life in an area. |
| resources | The materials found on Earth that people need and value. |
| diffusion | the spread of people, things, ideas, cultural practices, disease, technology, weather, and more from place to place |
| compass rose | a circle showing the principal directions printed on a map or chart. |
| cartography | the science or practice of drawing maps. |
