MICROSCOPE
functional microscope
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Light Microscope | The lenses bend or refract the light, which makes the object beneath them appear closer. |
| Light Microscope | the models found in most schools, use compound lenses and light to magnify objects. |
| Scanning Electron Microscope | allow scientists to view a universe too small to be seen with a light microscope. |
| Transmission Electron Microscope | also uses electrons, but instead of scanning the surface (as with SEM's) electrons are passed through very thin specimens. |
| Magnification | How much larger an object appears under a scope than it actually is |
| Oculars | engraved with their magnifying powers |
| Eyepieces (Oculars) | the part of the microscope that magnifies the image produced by the microscope's objective so that it can be seen by the human eye. |
| Resolution | The rendering of detail |
| Light | the limiting factor of resolution |
| Blue Light | allows resolution of 0.2 microns |
| Depth of Field | The distance through which you can move the specimen and still have it in focus |
| Higher Magnification | the closer the objective is to the slide and so the depth of field decreases |
| Depth of Field | requires more delicate technique |
| Microscopy | talks a lot about magnification |
| Resolution | most important function of microscope |
| Things to use to clean the microscope | Lens paper or gauze & cleaning solution |
