| Mesoamerica | a geographic region that includes southern Mexico and much of Central America |
| codex | a "book" used by early Mesoamerican civilizations to record important events |
| tribute | a payment made by one country to another as a sign of respect |
| causeway | a raised road or pathway that crosses low or wet ground. |
| aqueduct | a structure designed to bring fresh water into a city or town |
| chinampa | literally means "floating gardens" that are small, man-made islands built on lakes to grow crops |
| conquistadors | Spanish conquerors of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century |
| calpulli | a clan (fundamental unit of Aztec society) |
| quipu | a large rope with different-colored small cords used to calculate and record information |
| Quechua | a group of languages spoken in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina |
| chasqui | the messengers (runners) of the Inca Empire |
| stela | a stone slab or carving typically with an inscription often serving as a gravestone |
