Body planes

TermDefinition
Sagittal plane anatomical plane that divides the body into right and left sections
Midsagittal plane Vertical plane that divides and symmetrical body into right and left sections
Frontal plane divides the body into dorsal and ventral sections
Transverse plane divides the body into superior and inferior sections
Ventral front/ anterior of any surface
Dorsal back part of the body
Anterior in front of, the front surface of
Posterior back side
Superior above, over top of
Inferior towards the bottom, away from the head-end of the body
Cephalic head, head-end
Caudal tail, hind part
Proximal near the center, point of attachment to the body
Distal parts of t body furthest from center
Medial toward the middle of center
Lateral the side of, away from, middle of the body
Dorsal cavity back of the body, contains craniel and vertebral cavities (brain and spinal cord)
Craniel cavity anterial portion of dorsal cavity
Spinal cavity formed by vertebral column that stores integral portion of central nervous system
Ventral cavity at anterior of the trunk (lungs, heart, intestines, reproductive organs)
Thoracic cavity contain organs, blood vessels, nerves
Abdominal cavity stomach, abdomen, liver, intestines, kidneys, lower part of esophagus
Pelvic cavity funnel shaped, surrounded by pelvic bones, urinary blatter, rectum, pelvic genitals
