| Christianity | Monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ |
| Monotheism | Belief in one god |
| Polytheism | Belief in multiple gods |
| Dictator | A person who rules with total authority |
| Justinian's Code | Believed to be one of the first sets of written laws |
| Public works | The systems and facilities that keep a city going |
| Barbarian | A person who lived outside the Roman Empire |
| Inflation | An increase in the price of goods and services compared to the value of money |
| Emperor | The supreme ruler of an empire |
| Icon | A religious image of Jesus or a saint |
| Patriarch | The leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church |
| Eastern Orthodox Church | Consisting of the Christian churches that originated in the church of the Eastern Roman Empire and do not recognize the authority of the pope |
| Pope | Leader of the Roman Catholic Church |
| Ottoman Empire | A Muslim empire based in Turkey that lasted from the 1300's to 1922. |
| Byzantine Empire | Eastern half of the Roman Empire that survived the fall of the Western half. |
