Chapter 14 Vocab Key Terms

abducted | Away from the body; the position of the patient's arm for arterial blood gas collection |
ABGs | Arterial Blood Gases - Tests used to assess a patient's oxygenation, ventilation, & acid-base balance |
anaerobic | Without air |
arteriospasm | Reflex or involuntary contraction of an artery. Can be used by pain or irritation during needle penetration of the artery muscle that may result from a patients anxiety during arterial puncture |
brachial artery | Artery located in the medial anterior aspect of the antecubital fossa near the insertion of the biceps muscle; the second choice for arterial puncture |
collateral circulation | An area supplied with blood from more than one artery so that circulation can be maintained if one vessel is obstructed |
embolism | Obstruction of a blood vessel by an embolus |
embolus | Circulating undissolved matter such as a blood clot |
femoral artery | Large artery located superficially in the groin, lateral to the pubic bone; it is the largest artery used for arterial puncture |
FiO2 | Fraction of Inspired Oxygen - as in oxygen therapy |
hypovolemia | State of decreased blood volume |
L/M | Liters Per Minute - as in oxygen therapy |
modified Allen test | A simple noninvasive test to assess collateral circulation before collecting a blood specimen from the radial artery |
radial artery | The artery located at the thumb side of the wrist, which is the first choice & most common site used for arterial puncture |
steady state | Stable condition required before obtaining blood gas specimens; that is, a condition which there has been no exercise, suctioning, or respirator change for at least 20 to 30 minutes |
thrombus | Blood clot |
ulnar artery | Artery located on the medial aspect or little-finger side of the wrist |
vasovagal response | Faintness or loss of consciousness related to hypotension caused by increased vagus nerve activity or abrupt pain or trauma can occur during arterial puncture |
