| blood film/smear | A drop of blood spread thinly on a microscope slide |
| calcaneus | Medical term for heel bone |
| capillary action | The ability of a liquid to be automatically drawn into a narrow space or tube |
| capillary specimen | Blood specimen that is a mixture of arterial, venous, & capillary blood obtained by puncturing the skin |
| CBG | Capillary Blood Gas - Blood gas determination performed on an arterialized capillary specimen |
| cyanotic | Marked by cyanosis or a bluish color from lack of oxygen |
| cystic fibrosis | Disorder of the exocrine glands that affects many body systems but primarily the lungs, upper respiratory tract, liver, & pancreas resulting in abnormally high levels of chloride in the sweat |
| differential | A test in which the number, type, & characteristics of blood cells are determined by examining a stained blood smear under a microscope. Abbrev, is diff |

| galactosemia | Inherited disorder caused by lack of the enzyme needed to convert the milk sugar galactose into glucose, which is needed by the body to produce energy |
| hypothyroidism | A disorder characterized by insufficient levels of thyroid hormones |
| interstitial fluid | Fluid in the tissue spaces between the cells |
| intracellular fluid | Fluid within the cells |
| kernicterus | Medical term for brain dysfunction caused by toxic levels of bilirubin |
| lancets | A sterile, disposable, sharp-pointed or bladed instrument that either punctures or makes an incision in the skin to obtain capillary blood specimens for testing |
| microcollection | The collection of tiny amounts of blood using capillary puncture |
| microhematocrit tubes | Disposable, narrow-bore plastic or plastic-clad glass capillary tubes that fill by capillary action |
