arterialized Arterial composition of capillary blood has been increased by warming the site to increase blood flow
blood film/smear A drop of blood spread thinly on a microscope slide
calcaneus Medical term for heel bone
capillary action The ability of a liquid to be automatically drawn into a narrow space or tube
capillary specimen Blood specimen that is a mixture of arterial, venous, & capillary blood obtained by puncturing the skin
CBG Capillary Blood Gas - Blood gas determination performed on an arterialized capillary specimen
cyanotic Marked by cyanosis or a bluish color from lack of oxygen
cystic fibrosis Disorder of the exocrine glands that affects many body systems but primarily the lungs, upper respiratory tract, liver, & pancreas resulting in abnormally high levels of chloride in the sweat
differential A test in which the number, type, & characteristics of blood cells are determined by examining a stained blood smear under a microscope. Abbrev, is diff
distal segment End or portion as in the end or distal segment of a finger
edematous Swollen with fluid
feather Thinnest area of a properly made blood smear where a differential is performed
galactosemia Inherited disorder caused by lack of the enzyme needed to convert the milk sugar galactose into glucose, which is needed by the body to produce energy
hypothyroidism A disorder characterized by insufficient levels of thyroid hormones
interstitial fluid Fluid in the tissue spaces between the cells
intracellular fluid Fluid within the cells
kernicterus Medical term for brain dysfunction caused by toxic levels of bilirubin
lancets A sterile, disposable, sharp-pointed or bladed instrument that either punctures or makes an incision in the skin to obtain capillary blood specimens for testing
microcollection The collection of tiny amounts of blood using capillary puncture
microhematocrit tubes Disposable, narrow-bore plastic or plastic-clad glass capillary tubes that fill by capillary action
microtubes Special small plastic tubes used to collect the tiny amounts of blood obtained from capillary punctures, aka microcollection containers
neonates Medical term for newborns
newborn screening Aka neonatal screening (NBS) - The routine testing of newborns for the presence of certain metabolic & genetic (inherited) disorders, such as phenylketonuria (PKU)
osteochondritis Inflammation of the bone & cartilage
osteomyelitis Inflammation of the bone marrow & adjacent bone
palmar surface The palm, underside, or grasping side of the hand
phototherapy Light therapy. For example, a treatment in which infants are placed under special lights to lower their bilirubin levels
PKU Phenylketonuria - Disorder that results from a defect in the enzyme that breaks down the amino acid phenylalanine, converting it into the amino acid tyrosine
plantar surface The sole or bottom surface of the foot
posterior curvature Medical term for the back of the heel
whorls Spiral pattern of the ridges & grooves that form a fingerprint
