Phlebotomy Chapter 7
Chapter 7 Vocab Key Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ACD | Acid Citrate Dextrose - Additive (anticoagulant) used for immunohematology tests such as DNA & HLA typing, used in paternity evaluation & to determine transplant compatibility |
| additive | Substance added to a blood collection tube; can be an anticoagulant, antiglycolytic agent, separator gel, preservative, or clot activator |
| anticoagulants | Substances that prevent blood from clotting |
| antiglycolytic agent | Additive that prevents the breakdown of glucose by the cells; prevents glycolysis |
| antiseptics | Substances used for skin cleaning that inhibit the growth of bacteria |
| bevel | The point of a needle that is cut on a slant for ease of skin entry |
| biocide | A chemical that kills or inhibits the growth of living organisms |
| blood collection sets | Special winged and nonwinged needle sets with attached tubing; used to collect blood from small or difficult veins |
| carryover/cross-contamination | Transfer of additive from one tube to the next |
| clear/discard tube | Term for a tube drawn to remove air or blood from the tubing and then thrown away |
| clot activator | Coagulation-enhancing substance used to collect serum, such as silica |
| CPD | Citrate-Phosphate-Dextrose - additive used for collecting units of blood, typically transfusion |
| disinfectants | Substances or solutions used to remove or kill microorganisms on surfaces & instruments |
| EDTA | Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid - anticoagulant that preserves blood cell shape & structure & inhibits platelet clumping |
| ETS | Evacuated Tube System - abbreviation for the collection system typically used for routine venipuncture; system in which patients blood flows directly into a collection tube through a needle inserted into a vein |
| evacuated tubes | Tubes with premeasured vacuums & color-coded stoppers |
| gauge | Number that is related to the diameter of the lumen of a needle |
| glycolysis | Breakdown or metabolism of glucose by blood cells |
| heparin | Anticoagulant that inhibits the formation of thrombin |
| hypodermic needle | Type of needle designed to be used when collecting blood with a syringe |
| lumen | Internal space of a vessel or tube |
| multisample needles | Needles that allow multiple tubes to be collected with a single venipuncture |
| order of draw | Special sequence in which tubes are filled during a multiple-tube draw intended to minimize cross-contamination |
| potassium oxalate | Anticoagulant commonly used with an antiglycolytic agent |
| PPTs | Plasma-Preparation Tubes - EDTA tubes containing separator gel |
| PSTs | Plasma-Separator Tubes - Heparinized gel tubes for separation of cells & plasma |
| RST | Rapid Serum Tube - Tube containing thrombin & gel barrier |
| SESIP | Sharps with Engineered Sharps Injury Protection - OSHA acronym for a sharp that has a safety feature |
| sharps containers | Special puncture-resistance leakproof disposable containers; used to dispose of used needles, lancets, & other sharp objects |
| sodium citrate | Anticoagulation commonly used to preserve coagulation factors by binding calcium |
| sodium fluoride | Most common antiglycolytic agent; preserves glucose & inhibits the growth of bacteria |
| SPS | Sodium Polyanethol Sulfonate - additive used in blood culture collection; reduces the action of a protein called complement, which destroys bacteria, slows down phagocytosis, & reduces the activity of certain antibiotics |
| SSTs | Serum-Separator Tubes gel tubes used for separation of cells & serum |
| syringe transfer device | Safety device required for syringe blood draws |
| thixotropic gel | Synthetic substance used to separate cells from serum or plasma |
| trace element-free tubes | Royal-blue-top tubes; tubes made of materials that are as free of trace-element contamination as possible |
| winged infusion set | Blood collection set with plastic extensions that resemble a butterfly |
