Blood Bank/Immunohematology Laboratory department that prepares blood products to be used for blood transfusions. Performs type and screen tests
C&S Culture & Sensitivity - testing done in microbiology department
certification Evidence that an individual has mastered fundamental competencies in a particular technical area
CEUs Continuing Education Units - units awarded for participation in sponsor workshops, seminars, & self-study programs
chemistry Laboratory department concerned with the detection & measurement of chemical substances in body fluids. Typically performs the most tests
CLIA '88 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 - sets standards for most laboratory personnel, a federal law administered by the CMS
CMS Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services - The federal agency that manages Medicare & Medicaid programs
coagulation Blood clotting process The study of the ability of blood to form & dissolve clots. Also department that performs protime tests
communication barriers Biases or personalized filters that are major obstructions to verbal communication

cytogenetics Laboratory department where samples are examined microscopically for chromosomal deficiencies that relate to genetic disease
cytology Laboratory department where cells in body tissues & fluids are identified, counted, & studied to diagnose malignant & premalignant conditions
ethical behavior Conforming to a standard of right & wrong conduct
ethics A system of moral principles or standards that govern conduct & the distinction between right & wrong

IACET International Association for Continuing Education & Training - provides a standard of unit of measurement to determine CE & training activities for diverse providers & purposes
ICD-10-PCS International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedural Coding System - coding system used by all HIPAA-covered entities

PHI Protected Health Information - Safeguarding the confidentiality of PHI is one of the primary aims of the HIPAA privacy rule
PHS Public Health Service - promotes & administers programs for public health
Phlebotomy Venesection - incision into the vein for the purpose of drawing blood
PPOs Preferred Provider Organizations - independent groups of physicians or hospitals that offer services to employers at discounted rates in exchange for a steady supply of patients
primary care a patient's main source of routine medical care, typically by a general physician
proxemics Study of an individual's concept & use of space
reference laboratories Large independent laboratories that receive & test specimens from many different facilities
secondary care Care by a specialist performing out-of-the-ordinary procedures in outpatient facilities
Serology/Immunology Laboratory department that performs tests that identify antibodies & antigens
TAT Turnaround Time - the amount of time taken to complete a process or fulfill a request
tertiary care Highly specialized/complex care & therapy services from practitioners
third-party payer An insurance company or government program that pays for healthcare services on behalf of a patient
UA Urinalysis - the analysis of urine & the laboratory department that commonly performs urinalysis test
