What were the lives of the first Americans? They were hunters and food gatherers.
What was the ceremony used to present wealth and prosperity? The potlatch.
What did the Anasazi build to use as shelter by the 900s? Pueblos.
How were religious ideas similar between the Native American tribes? Polytheism and the idea that the world was full of spirits.
To what did the Native American tribes show the most importance to as a social unit? Family.
What linked the Mayan cities together? Trade.
What was the government in Maya? The government was a theocracy in that the god-king was the leader of both the government and religion.
What did the Maya religion lead to? The development of mathematics, calendars, and astronomy
What writing system did the Mayans use? They used glyphs to record important events on a codex.
Where were the Mayas located? Present day South eastern Mexico, Northern Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Yucatan Peninsula.
What was the leading power of the Valley of Mexico? The Triple Alliance with the Aztecs.
What was the capital city of the Aztec Empire? Tenochtitlan
What did the Aztec civilization develop in order to allow people and products to travel? A causeway.
Where were the Aztecs located? present-day Mexico
Why did Aztec rely on human sacrifices so much? To make sure that the sun god was happy, and so the sun would rise every day.
Why was the environment so challenging for the Incas? They were always dealing with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and dry land that wasn’t good for agriculture.
What did the Incas use instead of a writing system? They kept records and sent messages with a quipu.
Where were the Incas located? Present day South America along the Andes Mountains from Southern Peru to Argentina.
What led to the decline of the Inca empire? It was eventually conquered by the Spanish.
What did the Incas create on the Andes Mountains? a "city in the sky" called Machu Picchu
