city-state | a city and the land surrounding it that is independently ruled; city-states are not a part of a larger government |
kingdom | a state ruled by a king or queen |
animism | a belief that natural objects like animals, plants, and rivers have spirits |
polytheism | the belief in more than one god |
adapt | to change in order to meet one’s needs |
modify | to make minor changes to something |
thrive | to develop well, successfully |

terrace farming | the technique of creating flat farmland on a hill by digging into the slope, leveling off a horizontal area, and using the soil that was dug out to support the field by building a wall above it |
aqueduct | a man made channel that moves water across a valley, usually a bridge supported by columns |
hierarchy | a system for ranking groups of people |
irrigation | the act of supplying water to land or crops |
chinampas | floating gardens created by the Aztecs to grow food in Lake Texcoco |
sacrifice | the act of killing a person or animal as an offering to a spirit |
