| World War I | The war fought in Europe from 1914 to 1918 over tensions caused by the alliance system, militarism, imperialism, and extreme nationalism |
| Triple Alliance | An alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed in 1882: it guaranteed that all members would help if any were attacked |
| Triple Entente | An agreement signed in 1907 among Russia, France, and Britain to aid one another in war. |
| Militarism | The policy of glorifying war and readying armed forces for conflict |
| Armament | Weapons and military supplies. |
| Ultimatum | A statement that threatens serious action if specified demands are not met. |
| Mobilize | To organize and prepare for war |
| Escalate | To grow or increase rapidly. |
| Allies | The countries that allied against the Central Powers: France, Britain, and Russia |
| Central Powers | A group of nations, led by Germany and Italy, that fought the Allies |
| Stalemate | A stand off or draw, making further action impossible for either side |
| Propaganda | News and information designed to influence people’s beliefs or actions. |
| U-boat | The name given to German submarines during WWI |
| Armistice | Truce, a halt to fighting |
| Fourteen Points | President Wilson’s terms for peace after WWI |
| Self-Determination | The principle that national groups should have the right to establish their own governments, free of foreign control |
| League of Nations | An organization of nations established in 1920 to promote world peace |
| Treaty of Versailles | The settlement made with Germany at the end of WWI that called for territorial changes, reparations, and German demilitarization |
| Demilitarize | To free from military control by removing all military personnel and fortifications |
| Mandate | A region administered by another country until it is judged ready for independence |
| Reparations | Payments made by one nation to another in compensation for property destroyed in war |
| Isolationism | Policy of avoiding involvement in the affairs of other nations |
| Total War | A war that involves all of the human and material resources of the countries that are taking part |
