Planes of the Body

QuestionAnswer
Sagittal divides body in half vertically between eyes
Midsagittal divides body in equal halves vertically and horizontally
Frontal divides body into front and back sections
Transverse divides body into superior and inferior (top and bottom)
Ventral Front of the body (face forward)
Dorsal Back of the body (spine side)
anterior Front of the body (when divided by frontal plane)
posterior Back of the body (when divided by frontal plane)
Superior Upper part of body (divided by transverse plane)
Inferior Lower part of body (divided by transverse plane)
medial close to middle of the body (midline) when divided by midsagittal
lateral further away from midline (middle of body) when divided by midsagittal
Proximal close to torso
Distal further away from torso
caudal towards the tail
cephalic towards the head
superficial towards the surface
deep inside
