| Gravity Model | used to explain the interactions among cities based on the size of the cities’ populations and the distance between them. |
| Rank Size Rule | states that the second-largest city in a country will be approximately one-half the size of the largest; the third-largest city will be approximately one-third the size of the largest city; and so on. |
| Central Place Theory | According to the theory, large cities produce higher-order goods and services, thus drawing trade and population from surrounding towns and villages. |
| Burgess concentric-zone model | visualizes cities developed in rings around a central business district, or CBD. |
| Hoyt sector model | envisions cities developed around a CBD and heavily influenced by transportation routes. |
| Harris and Ullman | multiple-nuclei model proposes a more fluid design, with commercial and residential nodes. |
| Galactic City Model | evolved from the multiple-nuclei model. represents a break from the traditional view of cities in which land values and economic activities are strongly or almost exclusively linked to the location of the CBD. |
| Latin American Model | based date to the Age of Exploration, when the Spanish colonialists built towns and cities placing the church, government, and businesses at the center. With spine! |
| African City Model | have three CBDs. The first, colonial powers, is often built in a grid pattern for power and control. The second CBD is more traditional, with retail stores and curbside commerce. The third is a zone for open-air markets. |
| Southeast Asian City Model | many cities in the region are located on ports. According to the model, port cities lack a clearly defined CBD. They have two formal zones—the port zone and the market gardening zone on the periphery. |
