Why did Kilwa grow rich? Kilwa grew rich because it was far south on the coast as a ship from India could sail in one monsoon season.
What were two results from Kilwa controlling Sofala? Kilwa was able to control the overseas trade of gold from southern Africa. Kilwa also became the wealthiest and most powerful coastal city-state.
What happened in 1488? The first Portuguese ships rounded the southern tip of Africa and sailed north, looking for a sea route to India. They wanted to gain profits from the Asian trade in spices, perfumes, and silks.
When the Portuguese saw the wealth of the East African city-states, what did they decide to do? They decided to conquer those cities and take over the trade themselves using their shipboard cannon. The Portuguese took Sofala, Kilwa, and Mombasa
What did Arab Muslims export from East African coast? Arab Muslims exported luxury goods along with slaves cross the East African coast.
What happened to the slaves that the Muslims were shipping across the Indian Ocean to India? Indian rulers employed the slaves as soldiers. The enslaved Africans also worked on docks and ships at Muslim-controlled ports and household servants in China.
What happened to Great Zimbabwe? Farming had worn out the soil, and people had used up the salt and timber. The area could no longer support a large population.
What is the definition of mwenemutapa? "Conqueror" or "Master Pillager"
What did Mutapa rulers force people to do? Mutapa rulers forced people in conquered areas to mine gold for them. The rulers sent gold to the coastal city-states in exchange for luxuries
What happened in the 1500s? In the 1500s, the Portuguese tried to conquer the empire. When they failed to do so, they resorted to interfering in Mutapa politics.
In the third century, who did Aksum trade with? Arabia, Persia, India, and Rome.
Where did the gold and ivory that helped the city-states grow? The interior of Southern Africa
