| ziggurat | a temple that served as a shrine where Sumerians believed gods and goddesses ruled the city |

| Code of Hammurabi | a strict and harsh set of laws created by the Babylonian king, Hammurabi |
| Cuneiform | a form of writing developed by the Sumerians using a wedge shaped stylus and clay tablets |
| polytheistic | the belief in multiple gods (Mesopotamia carried this belief) |
| monotheistic | the belief in one god (Christianity carries this belief) |
| patriarchal | a type of society controlled by men in which women typically have very few rights or privileges |
| nomad | a member of a group that has no permanent home that wanders from place to place in search of food and water |
