| European Economic Community | An alliance formed in 1957 by six West European countries dedicated to developing common trade policies and reduced tariffs; it gradually developed into the larger European Union |
| Marshall Plan | Huge U.S. government initiative to aid in the post-World War II recovery of Western Europe that was put into effect in 1948 |
| Great Leap Forward | economic and social plan aimed to use China's vast population to rapidly transform the country from an agrarian economy into a modern industrial society |
| Cultural Revolution | Ordered by Mao Zedong to combat the capitalist tendencies that he believed reached into even the highest ranks of the Communist Party; the campaign threw China into chaos |
| Cold war | A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years |
| NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization; an alliance made to defend one another if they were attacked by any other country; US, England, France, Canada, Western European countries |
| Warsaw Pact | An alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. This was in response to the NATO |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | 1962 crisis that arose between the United States and the Soviet Union over a Soviet attempt to deploy nuclear missiles in Cuba |
| Proxy Wars | During the Cold War, local or regional wars in which the superpowers armed, trained, and financed the combatants |
| Non-Aligned Movement | The group of nations that didn't side with either the US or the USSR during the Cold War |
| Egypt in the Cold War | Soviet's deepened military control leading this state to start switching loyalty between superpowers eventually becoming mainly american |
| Decolonization | the action of changing from colonial to independent status |
| Ideal of Self-Determination | Idea that people have the right to choose to overpower political rule |
| Indian National Congress | Indian nationalist group formed to work for rights and power for Indians under British rule |
| Mohandas Gandhi | Leader of the Indian independence movement and advocate of nonviolent resistance. After being educated as a lawyer in England, he returned to India and became leader of the Indian National Congress in 1920 |

| Glasnost | a policy of the Soviet government allowing freer discussion of social problems |
| Iranian Revolution | (1978-1979) a revolution against Iran which resulted in Iran becoming an Islamic republic with Khomeini as its leader |
