Central powers | Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria |
"Total war" | A conflict in which the participating countries devote all their resources to the war effort |
Treaty of Versailles | the treaty imposed on Germany by the Allied powers in 1920 after the end of World War I which demanded ridiculous amends from the Germans |
Armenian Genocide | The massacre of Armenians conducted by Turkey during WWI |
Russian Revolution | The revolution against the Tsarist government which led to the retirement of Nicholas II and the creation of a transition gov. in March 1917 |
Lenin | Russian founder of the Bolsheviks, leader of the Russian Revolution, and first head of the USSR (1870-1924) |
Stalin | Russian leader who replaced Lenin as head of the Communist Party and created a totalitarian state by purging all opposition (1879-1953) |
Collectivization of Agriculture | The forcible consolidation of individual peasant farms into large state-controlled enterprises in the Soviet Union under Stalin |
Kulaks | Rich peasants in the Russian Empire who owned larger farms and used hired labour. They were their own class |
Five year plan | Stalin's economic policy to rebuild the Soviet economy after WWI. Tried to improve heavy industry and improve farm output, but resulted in famine |
Great Depression | the economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and continuing through the 1930s |
New Deal | Series of reforms that ended the Great Depression under rule of Franklin Roosevelt |
Fascism | A political system headed by a dictator that calls for extreme nationalism and racism and no tolerance of resistance |
Mussolini | Fascist leader of Italy for almost 21 years |
Hitler (and party) | Dictator of Germany (1933-1945); known as the Nazis |
World War ll | War fought from 1939 to 1945 between the Allies and the Axis, involving most countries in the world. The United States joined the Allies in 1941, helping them to victory. |
Revolutionary War | A war between the British and the colonists b/c they wanted to be free of British rule |
Holocaust | a large-scale destruction, especially by fire, of Euro Jews; a burnt offering by the Nazis |
United Nations | An international organization formed after WWII to promote international peace, security, and cooperation |
Mao Zedong | Chinese Communist leader from 1949 to 1976 |
Guomindang | Political party that ruled China from 1911 to 1949; enemy of the Communists. Abbreviated as GMD |
