Joseph Stalin | A shrewd political operator and behind-the-scenes organizer; supported building socialism in the U.S.S.R. rather than the entire world at the time; contended with Leon Trotsky, another Communist leader, for power over U.S.S.R. |
Red Square | The historic public square in Moscow where tens of thousands of people came to view the preserved body of Vladimir Lenin under permanent display |
Five Year Plans | several plans proposed by Joseph Stalin with the purpose of building heavy industry, improving transportation, and increasing farm output |
Command Economy | system in which Soviet government officials made all basic economic decisions |
Collectives | large farms owned and operated by peasants as a group; government provided tractors, fertilizers, and better seed; peasants learned modern farming methods |
Kulaks | wealthy peasant farmers in the Soviet Union in the 1930s |
Terror Famine | scarce agriculture output caused by the soviet government's seizure of all of farmers' grains in order to meet industrial goals; as a result, millions died of starvation because they resisted giving up their land to the government |
Purges | reign of terror when the government rid of Old Bosheviks and anyone who seemed to support conterrevolutionary plots or who failed to meet production quotas by charging them with crimes |
Cult of Personality | Stalin's attempt to boost the morale and faith in the Communist system by making himself a godlike figure |
Socialist Realism | artistic style whose goal was to promote socialism by showing soviet life in a positive light |
