Henry the Navigator Portugal’s Prince - Opened a navigation school.
Caravel A ship with triangular sails.
Mercantilism A favorable balance of trade. Lots of exports = More money (Selling). Lots of imports = Less money (Paying).
Treaty of Tordesillas Portugal and Spain - Agreed that Portugal has all the East land and Spain had all the West land.
Colony A group of people of one nationality living in a foreign area.
Conquistador Spanish soldiers and adventurers.
Hernan Cortes Conquistador conquered Mexico in 1519.
Atahualpa Inca Ruler that was killed by Pizarro.
Columbian Exchange An exchange of goods (foods, animals, etc.) and bads (disease) from Europe to the Americas and the Americas to Europe.
Smallpox A disease spread from Europe to the Americas.
Vasco da Gama 1st European Explorer (Portuguese) to find a sea trade route to India. 1st European Explorer (Portuguese) to find a sea trade route to India.
Joint-stock company Sold shares of stocks to investors who became partners in the venture.
Capitalism Businesses are privately owned and exist solely for the purpose of making profits.
Bartolome de las Casas <- Tied with Econ. and Haci. - Spoke out against the system. Spanish priest who spoke out against the abuse of Native Americas.
Encomienda <- Tied with Haci. (Was the system on the plantation) Legal system where the colonist get labor from the Native Americans and give the Native Americans “protection from enemies.” They were still abused and the Spainsh were the enemies.
Viceroy Colonial leader representing the Spanish King.
Mestizo <- Word kinda looks like Mixed. People of mixed Native American and Spanish descent.
Hacienda <- Tied with Encon. A large plantation in a Spanish colony.
Indentured servants Workers under contract that worked for a number of years for free passage to into colonies.
Zheng He Chinese + Muslim sea traveler that traded with foreign countries on treasure ships.
