| acropolis | A high hill. The Parthenon is here and it was built for Athena. |
| polis | a Greek word for city-state |
| classical | marked by great achievements |
| tyranny | Leadership that holds power through the use of force |
| oligarchy | a few people that have power |
| citizens | people who had the right to participate in government |
| aristocrats | rich landowners |
| democracy | a type of government in which people rule themselves |
| Sparta | a city-state dominated by the military |
| Athens | a city-state that had a strong army and valued education and the arts |
| Peloponnesian War | A war between Athens and Sparta that threatened to tear all of Greece apart lasted 27 years ended the Golden Age of Athens |
| Parthenon | A famous temple of Athena located on the Athenian acropolis. Built by Pericles |
| Pericles | A brilliant elected leader of Athens. He helped build its democracy |
| Alexander the Great | One of the most famous ancient Greek conquerors who lived from 356 B.C. - 323 B.C. Son of King Philip II of Macedonia |
| Socrates | A famous Greek philosopher, teacher, and thinker |
| Plato | A famous Greek philosopher, teacher, and thinker. A student of Socrates |
| Aristotle | A famous Greek philosopher, teacher, and thinker. Student of Plato. Alexander the Great’s teacher |
| Hippocrates | Known for his dedication to patients and medicine |
| Homer | Great poet, wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey |
| monarchy | A form of government ruled by a king or queen. Power is inherited. |
