acropolis | A high hill. The Parthenon is here and it was built for Athena. |
polis | a Greek word for city-state |

tyrant | a leader who held power through the use of force |
oligarchy | a few people that have power |
citizens | people who had the right to participate in government |
aristocrats | rich landowners |
democracy | a type of government in which people rule themselves |
Sparta | a city-state dominated by the military |
Athens | a city-state that had a strong army and valued education and the arts |
Peloponnesian War | A war between Athens and Sparta that threatened to tear all of Greece apart lasted 27 years ended the Golden Age of Athens |
