Nutrients are grouped into: Fats, Proteins, Carbohydrates, minerals, water and vitamins
Protein Encourages tissue growth and repair.
Carbohydrates Provide energy and fibre
Fats Provide energy and taste
Vitamin A Helps with resistance to infection, growth, vision, healthy hair, skin, mucous membranes,
Folic Acid Formation of red blood cells, intestinal function and protein metabolism.
Vitamin C Resistance to infection
Vitamin D Healthy bones absorption of calcium and generally provided by the sun
Sodium fluid balances, nerve function, muscle function
Iron Enables red blood cells to carry oxygen
How much water do you need in a day? 1500-2000 ml for normal fluid balance, maintenance of cell function, regulate temperature and deliver nutrients.
What is fat soluble? Nutrients stored in fat.
What is water soluble? Nutrients stored in water.
What is the conversion of OZto ML? 1 OZ equals 30 ML
IV therapy delivers blood and meds to body, hydration, nutrition, replaces minerals and vitamins, provides hyperalimentation
What is hyperalimentation? It is the complete delivery of nutrients through the veins, bypassing the digestive system.
Bolus feeding 15-20 mins, 3-4 times a day. Kangeroo pump or gravity drip is used.
Naso-gastric is: nose to stomach
Nas0-intestinal is: nose to small intestine
gastrostomy tube is: surgically implanting a tube in the stomach.
jejunostomy tube is: tube surgically put in the small intestine and jejunum.
gastro-jejunostomy connects the stomach to the jejunum
percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (PEG) A tube inserted through the stomach using an endoscope.
what four processes are involved in digestion? ingestion, digestion, absorption and use by body
3 types of fat are: trans: processed food/oil, chemically altered saturated: animal and dairy unsaturated: healthy unprocessed oils and fat, fish
Carbohydrates are divided into three categories: Starch, Fibre and Simple Sugars
What is the small intestine and its function? Food nutrient absorption takes place, consists of Ileum, Jejunum and Dudenum.
Function of large intestine: Absorbs water
Mastication chewing
Deglutition swallowing
Ingestion process of taking food and fluids into the body
Absorption process in which nutritional substances pass through the intestinal wall into the blood.
Dysphagia trouble swallowing
Aspiration Inhalation of fluid or an object into the lungs
Vitamins Does not provide calories but is needed for certain body functions.
Minerals Needed for tooth and bone formation.
