Body Positions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| erect | standing up position with palms facing forward. used to check chest x-rays, neurological deficits, and instant rise in blood pressure upon standing. |
| knee-chest | lying facedown with knees bent; resting on the knees and chest; used in rectal and pelvic exams |
| lateral | Lying on the left or right side. A recovery position to prevent pressure on the vena cava. |
| prone | lying flat with the face down; used for breast cancer care, and bedsore treatments. (Commonly seen as a rest position for kids) |
| fowler's position | laying down while the head of bed is elevated; used for comfort and rest |
| supine | lying flat while faced up; used for CT and MRI scans and X-Rays |
| sims position | lying on the straight on lateral side, other hip and knee bent or flexed; used in rectal exams |
