motion terminology ( muscular )
| Term | Definition |

| abductions | moving away from the midline of body ( lifting your arm) |
| adduction | means moving toward the midline of body ( bring your arm down) |
| flexion | means bending or decreasing the angle at the joint ( bending arm at elbow) |
| extension | straightening or increasing angle at the joint ( straightening arm out straight ) |
| elevation | raising a body part ( when you take a breath your ribs rise ) |
| depression | lowering the body part ( when you breath out your ribs lower ) |
| rotation | turning of the bone on its own axis / pivoting ( turning your head ) |
| circumduction | moving and extremity in a circular moition |
| supination | turning of your arm so that you palm is facing upward |
| dorsiflexion | bending your foot upward at the ankle toward your face |
| plantar flexion | bending foot downward toward the ground at the ankle |
| retraction | moving a body part backward ( tilting your head backward) |
| protraction | moving a body part forward ( bending your head forward ) |
| external rotation | turning of a limb about its axis of rotation away from midline of body |
| internal rotation | turning of a limb about its axis or rotation towards the midline of body |
