Fertile Crescent | fertile land in the Middle East stretching from Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf. |
Irrigation | supplies water to the crops using walls, waterways, ditches and canals. |
Job Specialization | members of the community are suited for certain occupations. |
Mesopotamia | The land between two rivers. |
Nobles | High Class that has special social or political status. |
Polytheism | the belief in many Gods. |
Scribes | an honored position; record keeper |
Social pyramid | shows the levels of each social class in terms of importance. |
Sumer | region in Southern Mesopotamia that had many cities by 3000 BCE |
City-state | city that had it's own government and was NOT part of any larger unit. |
Sargon | King of Akkadians in northern Mesopotamia. |
Babylon | Ancient city that is now present day Iraq. |
Hammurabi's Codes | a collection of over 200 laws. |
Artisans | skilled workers who made metal products or pottery. |
Empire | A group of many lands under ONE rule. |
Ziggurat | a temple used for worship. |
Cuneiform | the writing system that used wedge shaped marks cut into a clay tablet. |

Akkadians | a group of people who took over Sumer and formed the first empire. |
