Explain Med Term
Explanation of Medical Terminology
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Root | The basic meaning of a term. Core meaning of the word & often pertains to a body part or system. The root forms the middle of the word when a prefix is present. If there is no prefix, the root will form the first part of the word. Can have multiple roots. |
Suffix | Adds additional meaning to the end of a term. Medical terms always end with a suffix. The suffix usually indicates a specialty, test, procedure, function, condition/disorder, or status. |
Prefix | Adds additional meaning to the beginning of a term. Usually indicates a location, direction, type, quality, or quantity. When a prefix is absent, the term begins with a root. |
Combining Form | A root plus a vowel, becomes a combining form. The combining vowel is used before suffixes that begin with a consonant and before another word root. *Prefixes are not included in this rule. |
Combining Vowel | Adds a root to a root or a root to a suffix. Usually an o, and is used to ease pronunciation of the medical term. A combining vowel is used to connect two word roots and to connect a word root and a suffix. |
Suffix beginning in a Vowel | Do Not use a combining vowel. |
Reading Direction | Read a Medical Term from the rear to the front. |
