Who is Gaia? Goddess of the Earth; married to Uranos
Who is Uranos? God of the sky; had 12 children called Titans
Who are the two main Titans? Kronos and Rhea
What is Uranos downfall? He imprisoned his children; Kronos cut off Uranos "down there are" (which created Aphrodite). Kronos and Rhea took over
What is Kronos downfall? Pt 1 6 children (Poseidon, Hera, Hades, Zeus, Demeter, and Hestia); Prophecy: That the offspring of Kronos would over throw him, so he ate his children, all besides Zeus because he was tricked by Rhea who gave him a brick instead of a child.
Who are the three brothers? Zeus: Ruler of the Heavens, Poseidon: Ruler of the Sea, and Hades: Ruler of Underworld or Grey Mist
Who is Zeus? Ruler of the Heavens and earth, "the all wise", Roman Name: Jupiter, Hero Children: Heracles, Married to Hera, but notorious for sleeping with other women and getting them pregnant
What are Zeus's Symbols? Lighting Bolts, Eagle
Who is Poseidon? Roman Name: Neptune, Ruler of the Sea and God of earthquakes, Earth Shaker
What Poseidon's Symbols? Tridents, horse + bulls, fish or dolphin
What is Poseidon's Conquest? Never married, but had a lot of affairs; thought to have fathered Theseus, had "relations" with Medusa in the temple of Athena (Medusa was a beautiful mortal who was then cursed by Athena to become a gorgon like her two sisters bec. of Poseidon)
Who is Hades? Roman Name: Pluto, Ruler of the Underworld, The Unseen One, was not seen as vindictive - death was apart of life
What is Kronos downfall? Pt 2 Zeus was rasied by Amalthea. Zeus obiatined a potion which made Kronos spit out al his children and they all became grateful of Zeus. Zeus went on to lead them to defeat the Titans.
What are Hades Symbols? Cerberus, Helmet of Invisibility, Cypress Tree, Keys
What happened between Hades and Persephone? Hades kidnapped Persephone and brought to the underworld to be his wife
What is the Underworld? Dead enter by crossing The Acheron (River of Souls), Four rivers: Cocytus (river of lamentation), Phlegethon (Fire), Lethe (Obilivon), and Styx. Hades was the judge of the death. Asphodel: similar to purgatory. Tartarus, Asphodel, and Elysium
Who are the three sisters? Hetsia: Tends to the fire on Olympus, Demeter: Goddess of Grains, Seasons, and Harvest, Hera: Queen of the Gods
What are Hetsia symbols? Hearth and Pig
Who is Demeter? Roman Name: Ceres, Goddess of grains, seasons and harvest. Mother of Persephone
What are Demeter symbols? Torch, sheaf of wheat
What was Demeter's Search for Persephone? She was looking for her daughter. While looking nothing grew and everything was dying. Eventually Helios (the sun) told Demeter about Hades. Demeter refused to let anything grow until Persephone was returned
What was the Return of Persephone? Hades agreed to give her back, but he tricked Persephone into eating Pomegranate seeds from the underworld before her journey back to her mother, In consequence, Persephone would have to stay in the underworld for a part of year
Who is Hera? Queen of the Gods, Roman Name: Juno, Significant children : Ares, Eris, Hephaestus
What are Hera's symbols? Pomegranate, peacock feathers
What was Hera's wrath? She didn't like Zeus'affairs, so she punished the women. Heracles mother's legs were tied in a knot by Hera. Leto was pregnant with twins + she refused to let Leto give birth + she found out Echo helped cover up Zeus' affairs,Echo could only repeat words
What was Hera's wrath on Heracles? Sent snakes on him as a baby trying to kill him; didn't work. She then inflicted him with madness which made him kill his wife and children. He then had to go through 12 labors to right this wrong
