Why was European involvement limited to the coast? Fear of tropical diseases like malaria, slaves were gathered by African/Arabs and bought to the coast to be sold.
What area or colony in the New World received the most African slaves? Brazil.
2 things that helped end the Atlantic Slave Trade? Growing beliefs against it, technology advances and makes slavery obsolete.
Atlantic Slave Trade time period? 1400's-1800's.
Triangle Trade- Trade between 3 ports or religions.
Middle Passage- Second part of the triangle, estimated 10-24 million. enslaved Africans transported to the "new world" 1-5 who began the journey died.
3 ports in the Triangular Trade. New World, Europe, West Africa.
What product left from each port in Triangular Trade? West Africa- Slaves Loaded New World- Sugar, Cotton, Molasses, Tobacco, Wheat Loaded Europe- Rum, Weapons,Textiles Loaded
David Livingstone- Explored Southern Africa on four different expeditions and would send letters about his trip.
Henry Stanley- American British newspaper reporter that was hired to find Livingstone.
3 reasons why Livingstone explored Africa- Convert Africans to Christianity, Attempt to discover trade and find the source of the Nile river, possibly end slave trade.
Quinine- Treated Malaria, Safer for Europeans
Imperialism- Policy of conquering and taking over foreign lands.
Colonization- Occupation of foreign lands to exploit them economically.
Partition- To divide.
Why wasn’t Liberia or Ethiopia colonized? Ethiopia- bad land, great leader, great army. Liberia- U.S created Liberia for free slaves, then the U.S asked the Europian's not to colonize them and they listened.
European views on colonization- Europe gains resources, Africa gains knowledge. Africa gains infrastructure (roads, railroads, ports, churches, hospitals).
African views on colonization- Hard work for low pay, discrimination, home lands taken, unfair laws.
Reasons why Europeans began colonizing Africa (going into the heart of Africa) 1800's Europe was looking for raw materials, industrial rev, and a steady buyer of manufacturing goods.
What was the Berlin Conference? Conference to establish ground rules to avoid bloodshed.
Who controlled most of the land in Africa at the time of the conference? France, but their land wasn't very good.
Indigenous- Native to a region.
King Menelik II and why he’s important- Smart leader, and he understood plans. Ruler of Ethiopia, he wrote to Sudan informing them of the European plan and helped Sudan increase friendships.
Nationalism People demand for independence.
King Leopold II King of Belgium, Colonized the Congo, was a harsh ruler, 10 million died unnaturally in the Congo, if slaves resisted work in the Congo they would cut off your hand and if you still resisted they would cut off your kids hand also.
What decade did most of Africa have their independence? Around 1960's
