What was the effect of geography on Ancient Greece? Mountains and islands led to independent city-states (like Athens and Sparta)
What body of water lies to the east of Greek mainland? Aegean Sea
What is the large body of water bordered by Europe, Asia, and Africa? Mediterranean Sea
What is a peninsula? A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides
What is a Polis? A city-state in Ancient Greece
What is Acropolis? A fortified hilltop in an Ancient Greece city
What is an Agora? An open area where Greeks meet to sell things and gather for discussion
What are Hopilites? Heavily armed foot soldiers
What is a Citizen? A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his/her community or country
Which city-state has a powerful Greek military that valued military training? Sparta
What is an Oligarchy? A government ruled by a few powerful people
What are Helots? Spartan slaves
What body of water is to the west of Greece? Ionian Sea
Which city-state is a democratic Greek polis that valued education and the arts? Athens
What is a democracy? All citizens have a part in the government (whether it be in the leaders or in making the actual laws)
Who is Alexander the Great? He was a King of Macedonia who conquered Greece, Egypt, and Persia, and he united the Greek city-states
What is Hellenistic Culture? A combination of Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Indian cultures. This culture was spread as a result of Alexanders conquest.
Who is King Philip of Macedonia? Father of Alexander the Great, reorganized and strengthened the Macedonian army with the phalanx system, conquered all of Greece to protect them from Persia, but respected Greek culture
